Why we are proud our mushrooms come from China

When someone asks where our mushrooms come from, I say it plainly: China. Over the years, a mountain of myths has grown around production that takes place in China. If it were not for China, the Western world would probably not be enjoying the benefits of adaptogens at all. For me, origin is the starting point of a conversation about tradition, cultivation and quality control, not something to hide on a label.

Why is China the cultural home of functional mushrooms?

Reishi, cordyceps and lion's mane have been part of Chinese tradition for thousands of years, described in classical recipes as an element of diet and cuisine. That is not a marketing story, it is a historical fact the entire modern functional mushroom category is built on, along with thousands of scientific studies that grow in number every year, driven by the rising interest in mushrooms in the context of longevity research.

Where and how are the mushrooms we sell grown?

The farms we work with operate in mountainous, non-industrial areas, far from major cities and heavy industry. That is a condition we set when choosing a supplier, alongside substrate control and strain selection, which we also covered when describing our PRIME and LONGEVITY lines.

Mountain terrain is also a practical choice for growers: functional mushrooms have grown there for generations, in the climate and altitude long recognised as suited to each species. Nutritionally, the profile of active compounds in fruiting bodies grown in near-natural conditions looks completely different from that of mushrooms cultivated in laboratory conditions. From our point of view, confirmed by the active compound tests of each batch: the closer to nature, the higher the concentration of the valuable compounds found in mushrooms.

What does Chinese extraction technology give us?

The Chinese have developed their own unique method of extracting functional mushrooms, and their technology parks are among the most advanced in the world today. We work with two such centres, specialised exclusively in functional mushrooms.

We deliberately do not publish the names of these parks or specific farms publicly. These are relationships built over years and part of our competitive edge, the same way no producer publishes a full list of suppliers with addresses.

Can China supply both low and high quality raw material?

Yes, and we say it plainly: from China, as from any other country, you can source raw material of low quality or very high quality. It depends what you are looking for. At Aloha Fungi we have prioritised quality over the highest margins from day one. And quality costs. Country of origin by itself says nothing about quality. What does is verification of the specific batch, the extraction method and our own approach to what we want to achieve in the final product.

That is why we know our mushrooms "from the spore": from strain selection, through growing conditions, to the extraction method. Every batch we sell goes through independent laboratory testing, and we publish the results as batch passports on the /badania page. That is our manifesto.

Where does the distrust of "made in China" come from?

Distrust of raw material from China most often comes from fear of contamination: heavy metals and pesticide residues, which made headlines in cheaper, uncontrolled supply chains. That caution is reasonable, just misdirected.

The answer to that fear is not the country printed on the label, it is testing the specific batch you hold in your hand. A "not from China" label guarantees nothing, just as a "from China" label disqualifies nothing. What matters is the lab document, not the geography. I should add that every batch of our extracts is prepared fresh. From the moment the extract is produced and tested in the laboratory to its arrival in our warehouse in Poland, 7-10 working days pass. Fast, efficient logistics by air freight is another element of our strategy.

Who is watching quality on our side?

I am a doctor of Chinese medicine and I currently live in Asia. Functional mushrooms are not a trendy raw material from a catalogue to me, but part of a tradition I studied and that absorbed me completely, mainly because mushrooms such as Coriolus, Chaga and Lion's Mane pulled me out of a serious health crisis. That is why I personally and regularly visit the farms we work with.
