From strain to capsule. How our PRIME and LONGEVITY lines are made

Strain selection, substrate control, fruiting body over mycelium, double extraction. How Aloha Fungi builds the PRIME and LONGEVITY extracts, step by step.

Most functional mushroom brands talk about a 10:1 extract, certificates, or the percentage of a given compound. Those are real quality markers, but they describe the finished product. What actually decides the quality of an extract happens earlier: strain selection, substrate control, fruiting time, harvest timing, and where the mushroom is grown.

In Chinese tradition, a mushroom is never just a sum of active compounds. It is an organism with its own character, taste, and relationship to the seasons. We carry that piece of tradition into our work not as a promise, but as a way of looking at the raw material: not only numbers on a label, but the balance of a full profile.

Why do we run two product lines?

Daily supplementation and a targeted protocol are two different goals, so Aloha Fungi runs two lines: LONGEVITY for daily practice and PRIME for therapeutic precision. Trying to build one product for both purposes always ends in a compromise, either too strong or too weak for the goal at hand.

Someone building a regular routine values a fair price, gentle tolerance, and a balanced profile. Someone running a targeted protocol (for example, support during a demanding period, discussed with their treating physician) needs the highest possible concentration of active fractions and precise standardization. Two lines remove the compromise between these needs.

What both lines share: chain-of-production control

Whichever line you choose, the product is built on the same philosophy: five checkpoints, set before any raw material enters the process.

  • Strain selection. Functional mushroom species have dozens of cultivated strains that differ, among other things, in secondary metabolite profile. We work with growers who select strains for metabolites, not tonnage.
  • Substrate control. Our suppliers don't use cheaper, starch-enriched substrate. The raw material we source from China comes from regions certified by CERES, a German organic certification body.
  • Fruiting body, not mycelium. Aloha Fungi extracts are made from the fruiting body, not mycelium grown on grain. This distinction matters both for the compound profile and for regulation (fruiting bodies of most species are classified as traditionally consumed foods in the EU, while dehydrated mycelium of many of them falls under Novel Food).
  • Double water-alcohol extraction. Polysaccharides (β-glucans) need water, triterpenoids and other compounds need alcohol. A single extraction always leaves part of the profile behind.
  • Keeping balance. Maximizing a single compound is not our goal in itself. That's why even in PRIME, where we push active fraction concentration up to 80%, we keep 20% fruiting body powder, with its full profile of fiber, trace elements, and other compounds.

Fruiting body vs. mycelium: a voice in an industry debate

This question divides the industry, and we treat it as a debate, not an obvious answer. Paul Stamets, a well known mycologist and author of many publications on medicinal mushrooms, defends the grain-grown mycelium approach, arguing that fermentation creates unique compounds. That's a voice that deserves respect.

Our position comes from verifiability: independent testing shows that mycelium-on-grain products often mainly reflect the profile of the grain they were grown on, rather than the mushroom itself. Fruiting body extracts, in our lab testing, reach noticeably higher β-glucan concentrations. For a customer who wants to know exactly what's in the capsule, verifiability matters more to us than a promise.

Independent laboratory validation

Every batch of both lines is tested at EUROFINS, one of Europe's larger independent analytical laboratories. Testing covers heavy metals, pesticide residues, microbiological purity, and active fraction content. EUROFINS is not our own lab, which removes any conflict of interest.

What's the difference between LONGEVITY and PRIME?

LONGEVITY is a 10:1 extract at a 50% extract / 50% fruiting body powder ratio, built as a companion for a regular, daily practice. The fruiting body powder isn't filler, it's the full natural raw material profile, including fiber, minerals, and compounds that don't transfer into a water or alcohol extract. It's a form close to how the mushroom occurs in nature: a concentrated extract plus natural powder for a fuller profile.

LONGEVITY works well for a first encounter with functional mushrooms, for seasonal cycles (for example, autumn-winter), and when using several mushrooms together where the priority isn't maximizing each one individually.

PRIME is an 80% pure extract / 20% fruiting body powder ratio, built through multi-fraction extraction. Every active compound is best drawn out under different conditions: polysaccharides in hot water, triterpenoids in alcohol, heat-sensitive compounds at low temperature. A single standard process is always a compromise for at least one of these groups. PRIME combines several fractions, each produced under conditions optimal for its compound group, into one product.

This is technologically costly, which is why PRIME costs more and is built for protocols where the priority is maximum, lab-confirmed concentration rather than everyday, economical supplementation. It's worth discussing the choice between lines with a therapist or through a free consultation with the Aloha Fungi team, especially when supplementation accompanies treatment led by a physician.

What does the European functional mushroom market look like?

Today's market for powders, capsules, and tinctures splits into a few producer types, from cheaper grain-grown mycelium (with a large share of substrate starch), through fruiting body extracts without full chain control, to producers who document every step from strain to independent final testing. The higher price in that third segment reflects the cost of control, not just the brand.

A similar split applies to tinctures: from powders reconstituted in Europe, through traditional water-alcohol tinctures of moderate concentration, to concentrated tinctures made from the same, documented fruiting body extract used in our powders and capsules.

Which line are you looking for?

Neither line is "better for everyone." LONGEVITY is the economical choice for a long-term, regular practice. PRIME is the technological choice for shorter, intensive protocols where maximum concentration is the priority. If you're not sure, use a free consultation with the Aloha Fungi team. You'll find the full list of mushrooms in each line on the category pages in the shop.
