Why we use functional mushrooms 5 days a week, with a weekend break
Contents

Functional mushrooms 5 days a week means a serving from Monday to Friday and a break on Saturday and Sunday. That is what our product cards say now, including Reishi, Lion's Mane and Cordyceps. After about 90 days you decide what comes next.

We have no study comparing this rhythm with taking mushrooms every day. We have TCM tradition, Mateusz Rosa's practice with his clients, and a reason you can easily test on yourself.

What is the 5/2 rhythm and the 90-day cycle?

Five days you take the serving from the label, two days you take nothing. It is easy to remember: the weekend is the break, no counting days. You repeat that week for about 90 days. Then you continue, take a break of one week to one month, or start a new cycle after the break.

Why do we take a break at the weekend?

Because we don't want the body to get used to it, and we want to give it time for integration. That is the rule Mateusz Rosa follows with his clients, and that is how we wrote it on the cards. To be clear: this is practice and tradition, not the result of a comparative study.

"Take it Monday to Friday. Take a break on Saturday and Sunday. Why? So your body does not get used to it and has space for integration."

What does "not getting used to it" mean? The ritual doesn't turn into a reflex you do without thinking. On Monday you reach for the cup because you want to.

Integration is those two days when you add nothing. You look at what is left from the week.

What does TCM tradition say about three months?

TCM tradition measures change in seasons, not days. Three months is roughly one season, and in this tradition that is how long a process takes before you can judge what has changed. It is an image from tradition, not a promise. Where the number 90 comes from is in our post on the 90-day rule.

On the product cards it reads like this:

"TCM tradition describes change as a process that completes in about three months. After such a cycle you decide: continue, take a break (we recommend one week to one month completely off), then start the cycle again."

How do you use functional mushrooms in the 5/2 rhythm in practice?

Pin the serving to something you already do every day: morning coffee, breakfast, evening tea. Take the amount from the label of the specific product and the time of day from its card, because mushrooms differ here. Monday to Friday you do your thing, and on Saturday and Sunday you let it go. That is all it takes.

We usually take Cordyceps in the morning or at midday, as we explain in how Cordyceps works. Reishi suits the evening, with details in Reishi dosage. Lion's Mane goes well in morning coffee, more in the Lion's Mane usage FAQ.

What if you forget one day?

Nothing serious. You come back the next day at your usual time, with no double serving and no catching up at the weekend. One empty Tuesday doesn't change a rhythm you build over weeks. And if you forget on a Friday? Saturday and Sunday are a break anyway, so on Monday you simply pick the rhythm back up.

What should you do on Saturday and Sunday during the break?

Observe. In the evening, write two or three sentences about how the night went, how much energy there was, what the mood was like and whether your appetite felt different from usual. No judging, in your own words. After a few weekends your notebook holds something better than other people's opinions: your own record of what is changing for you.

Three questions for your notes:

  • How do you fall asleep and how do you wake up?
  • What is your energy like in the afternoon?
  • What is different from last week?

What comes after 90 days?

You sit down with your weekend notes and decide. You can stay with the 5/2 rhythm as it is. You can also take a complete break of one week to one month, with no functional mushrooms at all, and then start another 90 days. Both paths fit within our rule, so choose the one your notes point to.

What does Mateusz Rosa's practice with clients show?

The 5/2 rhythm came out of the treatment room. Mateusz Rosa, founder of Aloha Fungi and a TCM therapist, uses it with his clients. 80%* of Mateusz Rosa's clients feel a significant change in their well-being after the first month of use. These are their own impressions from an internal survey, not the result of a clinical trial.

FAQ

Can I take functional mushrooms every day?

We recommend 5 days a week with a weekend break, and that is how our product cards describe it. Always take the serving from the label. If you take medication or have a chronic condition, ask your doctor first.

Does the 5/2 rhythm apply to every mushroom?

It applies to our mushroom extracts, including Reishi, Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga and Shiitake. The exception is Polyporus, which is used in shorter courses. Check the serving and time of day on the card of the specific product.

How do I count 90 days in the 5/2 rhythm?

Count calendar days, weekends included. That is about 13 weeks, or roughly 65 days with a serving.

What if I take medication or am pregnant?

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before you start. You will find contraindications on the label of the specific product.
