You buy a mushroom extract, you pay for the quality of the raw material and the precision of the label, and then you put it on a sunny windowsill. How you store it affects what actually remains in the package a month from now.
Three enemies of an extract: light, heat, moisture
Active compounds in mushroom extracts, including chaga, are sensitive to direct sunlight and high temperature. A kitchen cupboard away from the radiator and the window works better than a windowsill or a counter next to the stove.
Drops
A dropper bottle is happiest at room temperature, out of direct light, with the cap tightly closed. After opening, limit how often it sits open in the sun. Every opening lets air and moisture in for a moment.
Capsules
Capsules are less sensitive to air than powder in an open container, but bathroom humidity (a typical spot for supplements) does not suit them. It is better to keep them in a dry room, away from shower steam.
Powder
Powder has the largest contact surface with air, so it loses quality fastest when stored poorly. Seal the package tightly right after measuring your serving, and avoid transferring it into other, non-airtight containers.
A short checklist
- Place: a dry cupboard, not a windowsill or a bathroom.
- Temperature: room temperature, away from the radiator and the oven.
- Seal: airtight after every use.
- Expiry date: check it at purchase and plan your use within that window.
Good storage does not change the composition of the extract, but it protects what you already paid for. You can read more about the differences between forms on the product forms page.
