How to read a mushroom supplement label. What to look for

Before buying a functional mushroom supplement, check three things on the label: which part of the mushroom was used (fruiting body or mycelium on a substrate), what the DER is (drug-extract ratio, i.e. the extraction ratio, e.g. 10:1), and what percentage of beta-glucans the producer declares and how it was measured (HPLC or the Megazyme method, not just "polysaccharide content"). Without these three data points, a label says very little about the product's real strength.

TL;DR. Three things to check on the label

Before buying a functional mushroom supplement, check three things on the label: which part of the mushroom was used (fruiting body or mycelium on a substrate), what the DER is (drug-extract ratio, i.e. the extraction ratio, e.g. 10:1), and what percentage of beta-glucans the producer declares and how it was measured (HPLC or the Megazyme method, not just "polysaccharide content").

"30% polysaccharides" is not the same as "30% beta-glucans". Polysaccharides are a broader category of compounds, including starch from the substrate the mycelium grew on. A producer who conflates these two terms may quote a number that looks impressive but says nothing about the actual beta-glucan content.

What to look for, what to avoid

The table below shows universal criteria for evaluating a label, regardless of brand. This isn't about comparing specific producers, just about the questions worth asking of any package.

Mushroom part

How to read DER (drug-extract ratio)

DER stands for drug-extract ratio, i.e. the ratio of how much raw material was used to produce one unit of extract. An extract labelled 10:1 theoretically came from ten units of raw material per one unit of finished product, though in practice the extraction method and the plant part used affect how much active substance actually ends up in the powder.

Example with neutral numbers: if a label states "extract 8:1", that's a different raw-material-to-product ratio than "extract 15:1". A higher number does not always mean a stronger product, because DER describes the extraction proportion, not the standardization of a specific compound. That's why you read DER together with standardization information (e.g. standardized to what percentage of beta-glucans), not on its own.

It's also worth checking whether the producer states exactly what the DER refers to, because a bare "10:1" with no context on extraction method (water, alcohol, two-step) is incomplete.

% beta-glucans. Why the testing method matters

The percentage of beta-glucans on a label only makes sense once you know how it was measured. The two most common methods are HPLC (liquid chromatography) and the enzymatic Megazyme method. Results from these methods aren't always directly comparable, so a label with no stated testing method is hard to verify.

The key trap: "30% polysaccharides" is not the same as "30% beta-glucans". Polysaccharides are a broader category of compounds, including starch from the substrate the mycelium grew on. A producer who conflates these two terms may quote a number that looks impressive but says nothing about the actual beta-glucan content, which is usually what a buyer cares about.

So look for a label that says "% beta-glucans" explicitly (not "% polysaccharides") and ideally states the testing method next to the number.

Best for…

Best for beginners · a product with a simple label: single species, clearly described mushroom part, DER and beta-glucan percentage stated. Fewer variables to evaluate to start.

Best for certificate checkers · a product whose producer provides a per-batch certificate of analysis (COA), ideally with a batch number that can be verified.

Best for budget purchases · a product made from mycelium powder on a grain substrate, as long as the label honestly describes the substrate's share. A deliberate budget choice is different from an unclear label.

Sources and methodology

The criteria in this comparison are based on widely used methods for evaluating functional mushroom extracts: liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the enzymatic Megazyme method for determining beta-glucans, as well as the practice of independent batch testing (e.g. laboratories such as Eurofins) used across the supplement industry. This is a description of methodology, not confirmation of the health effects of a specific product.

FAQ

Does a higher % of beta-glucans always mean better?

Not always. A higher percentage of beta-glucans is only valuable when the measurement method is credible and comparable (ideally HPLC or Megazyme). A number with no stated testing method may be inflated because the producer is counting general polysaccharides rather than beta-glucans alone.

Is fruiting body always better than mycelium?

Not automatically. Fruiting body usually gives a clearer picture of what the product was made from, but mycelium on a substrate can also be an honest, budget-friendly choice if the producer clearly describes the substrate's share and the production method. What matters is label clarity, not the name of the mushroom part alone.

What is a COA, and does the store have to provide one?

A COA (certificate of analysis) is a batch certificate, usually issued by an independent laboratory, confirming things like beta-glucan content and raw-material purity. Polish law doesn't require publishing a COA for every supplement, but producers who care about transparency usually provide it on request or publish it online.

What is DER and where do I find it on the label?

DER (drug-extract ratio) is the ratio of raw material to finished extract, e.g. 10:1. Look for it near the extract name on the label, or in the product description on the producer's website, next to information on species and mushroom part.

Is a mushroom supplement with no stated DER automatically worse?

Missing DER makes it harder to compare with other products, but doesn't by itself determine quality. Simple whole-fruiting-body powder products sometimes don't use the DER concept at all, because they aren't a concentrated extract. What matters is that the label clearly states whether it's an extract or a raw-material powder, and doesn't conflate the two.

Is a "standardized extract" the same as an extract with a stated DER?

Not always. "Standardized" means the producer guarantees a specific level of a given compound (e.g. % beta-glucans) regardless of the batch of raw material. DER describes the extraction proportion, while standardization describes the final result. The most reliable label states both together.
